As a high school student, I could have named many reasons why I wanted to move to New York: the art, the music, the food, etc… There was one thing that I did not expect expect would be so great about New York, and that would be the people! I came here knowing just about 2 people that I would see at school every few weeks, but little did I know that I would be meeting so many more people. What really got me excited though, was the celebrities.
First off is Dylan Sprouse. I grew up watching The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Big Daddy, and The Heart Is Deceitful Above all things. Meeting him was as simple as going to the park to sit down and draw and seeing him sitting on the patch of grass opposite me. He was super nice and was excited to get a picture with me.
Next was Jinkx Monsoon, winner of Ru Paul’s drag race and a figurehead in the currently growing drag community. I was able to meet her at one of her performances called The Vaudevillians.
Next we have Rick Genest also known as Rico or Zombie Boy who not only appeared in Lady Gaga’s music video for her hit song “Born This Way” but is also well known in the modeling world and for his role in the film “47 Ronin.”
Next is Haviland Morris who appeared in “Law and Order,” “Sixteen Candles” and my personal favorite of the “Home Alone” franchise, “Home alone 3”
This Is Alex Pardee, my biggest source of inspiration since I had first seen his artwork in fifth grade on the band The Used’s album cover for their album “In Love and Death.” I met him at his booth at Comic Con and due to connections that I made at Parsons, I was able to go to his gallery show at The Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn, a gallery that is owned by past Parsons teacher and famous illustrator Tara McPherson.
Last but most definitely not least is Lea (Big Boo) DeLaria from the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, and Tobin (Jigsaw Killer) Bell From the Saw franchise.
New York and The New School are the ones I have to thank for this and I will hopefully meet many more. You can too. 🙂
