Last week, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced their nominees for this year’s fashion awards. The annual ceremony, being held at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on June 3rd, will honor the top American designers of womenswear, menswear, and accessories (think Oscars for the fashion world). Among those nominated are many of our own Parsons alumni, including all the nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year!
During his over 25-year career, Marc Jacobs has become one of the fashion industry’s heaviest hitters, earning nine CFDA awards and countless other nominations. This year is no different, as he’s once again in the running for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Jacobs had previously won the Womenswear award in 2010, 1997, and 1992. He was even honored with the prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award during last year’s ceremony, though his life in fashion seems far from over.
At only 29 years-old, Alexander Wang has been making his mark on the world of fashion. No stranger to the CFDA, He’s already won three awards since launching his namesake collection in 2007. For this year’s ceremony, Wang is in the running for two separate categories. He will once again be competing for Womenswear Designer of the Year, which he had previously won in 2011. In addition, Alexander Wang is a contender for the Accessories Designer of the Year for the first time.
Proenza Schouler, the designer label brainchild of Jake McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, will also be in the running for two awards. Like Alexander Wang, the Proenza boys are nominated in the categories of Womenswear Designer of the Year and Accessories Designer of the Year, both of which they’ve won in 2011 and 2009 respectively.
Hailed as “the next Proenza Schouler,” the girl-power team Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of Cushnie Et Ochs have created quite the splash on the fashion scene since graduating from Parsons in 2008. This year, the dynamic duo has received their first CFDA nomination for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear. The Swarovski Awards honor up-and-coming designers and also include financial support for the winners. Earlier in his career, Alexander Wang won both the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear and Accessories Design.
Good luck to all the CFDA nominees representing Team Parsons!
