Event Ice Breakers for New Students

It is with a heavy heart that I make this announcement: Summer is almost over. But for many of you I’m sure it’ll be happily left behind. After all, there are greater things for you. Your valedictorian probably emphasized this in his/her graduation speech. As you’re busy tying up loose ends, I figured it’d be helpful to post all of the optional and super fun programming that our Student Services has cooked up for you once you arrive on campus. And here’s a tip straight from an Orientation Leader: “Sounds simple, but don’t be shy. Get out of your room during down time and meet your new classmates. Some of the relationships you make during Orientation last well over four years.”

August 16 – For last names A – L
August 17 – For last names M – Z (If you’re living off-campus, check in on this date, too.)

Indoor Rock Climbing – 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. (Departs from 90 Fifth Ave. Lobby) Brooklyn Boulders is an awesome indoor rock climbing facility built into an old Brooklyn warehouse. Powder up and get climbing.

Group Bike Ride in Central Park – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Departs from 90 Fifth Ave. Lobby) What’s more New York than bike riding in Central Park? Many things, probably, but this is up there on my list. Don’t worry if you haven’t brought your own ride to campus yet – free bikes will be provided.

Explore NYC – 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. & 4:15 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. (Departs from 55 W. 13th St. Lobby) Join one of these small group excursions to museums, parks, theaters, landmarks, and other NYC locales. Be sure to register early for a spot!

Jazz Coffeehouse – 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
(Theresa Lang, 55 W. 13th St.) Be classy and listen to the Jazz students play their sweet tunes. Also nosh on pastries.

Beyond Ramen – 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Lang Cafe, 65 W. 11th St.) No MSG for you! Learn food planning/prepping tips from our guest nutritionist and empower yourself. It’s easier than it looks.

Open Mic Night – 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (Wollman Hall, 65 W. 11th St.) Take a crack at stand-up or showcase your slam poetry. We’re all in this together, and remember, fortune favors the bold.

Katie’s not an Orientation Leader. She’s just modeling one of their shirts

Sustainability at The New School: Be Part of the Solution – 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (66 W. 12th St., Room 510) The New School needs your help to become carbon neutral by 2040! Stop by to learn about your New School carbon footprint and how to get involved in sustainability efforts.

The New School Serves: Volunteering in NYC – 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Departs from 90 Fifth Ave., 2nd Floor) Get instant karma by helping your new home town. There are different excursions to sign up for.

Staten Island Yankees Game – 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Departs from 90 Fifth Ave. Lobby) What’s better than minor league baseball? Minor league baseball in Staten Island…for free! Spaces are limited so register quickly.

New School, New York Scavenger Hunt – 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Meet in Theresa Lang, 55 W. 13th St.) NYC is probably the best scavenger hunt playing field ever. IRL of course.

Classical Music Brunch – 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Theresa Lang, 55 W. 13th St.) Enjoy Sunday brunch in style with a chamber concert courtesy of Mannes students. Relax and pat yourself on the back – you’ve survived Orientation and have met your first group of college friends.

You’ve probably been compulsively reading the schedule, so I’m going to assume that you know when all of your program’s mandatory events are. If not, download your copy on our New Student page. And good luck!

  1. I love the new school t-shirt , where can I get one?

    • Hi Xiaoye, those are Orientation Leader shirts, so if you have a question next week, hunt down a person in that shirt. They’ll also be able to direct you to the New School section of Barnes and Nobles to get TNS swag.

  2. Kalinka

Hey Victoria, I guess the dates are wrong from FRIDAY, AUGUST 18 until SUNDAY, AUGUST 20!!!
