The Importance of Sketchbooking

We love good sketchbooks. The scruffy book with the worn edges. The Moleskine smeared with paint and ink. The notebook with odd textures and accidentally glued together pages. The ones that you can tell someone loves to death. Sometimes, when reviewing portfolios, a student’s sketchbook will say more about their talents and concepts than their actual finished work. We really do appreciate artists who carry their sketchbooks on their person at all times, eagerly sketching when they get hit with an idea. Does this describe you?

Our current students don’t stop sketching. Ever. And the School of Design Strategies has an annual Foundation sketchbook competition and exhibition to reinforce/reward this practice. Here’s the video showing the winners from 2009.
